Open House Festival Marks Three Decades of Celebrating London’s Buildings

By Maurice Shasha  //  Mon 12th September 2022
Open House Festival, London’s annual celebration of unique buildings and spaces, turns 30 this year, with more opportunities than ever to peek inside some architectural wonders.
London Open House Festival
This year’s festival launched on 8 September but continues until 21 September with plenty of tours, talks and other free events to come, exploring London’s homes, architecture and landscapes.

Promising to be the most diverse Open House yet, the anniversary event includes music performances - from choirs to DJ sets. There is also a focus on London’s iconic social housing schemes and the chance to look inside buildings that are rarely open to the public - from the Bank of England to Mayfair’s Beaumont Hotel.

A special book is being published to coincide with the event, looking at how food and migration have contributed to London’s modern urban environment. London Feeds Itself, features contributions from 25 writers including Claudia Roden and Ruby Tandoh.

There are demonstrations of amazing infrastructure like the remarkable Rolling Bridge at Canning Town designed by Tom Randall-Page. Plus, you can join walking and cycling tours, exploring London’s heritage - such as a Westminster family trail about the capital’s forgotten history of black Tudors.

Zoë Cave, chief curator of the Open House Festival said: “To mark the 30th anniversary of the Open House Festival we’ve curated our most dynamic and diverse programme to date. What other festival includes everything from free tours of the Bank of England to DJ sets in Bexley’s Old Library? I’m especially excited about the many private homes that will be part of the 30th anniversary festival from multi-million pound houses designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architects to some of Britain's best council estates.”
