Be very afraid - October is London’s month of the dead

By Maurice Shasha  //  Mon 9th October 2023
In a month-long build-up to the spookiest day of the year, Halloween, the capital will once more serve up its annual arts festival of deadly delights - London Month of the Dead.
London Month of the Dead

Now a decade old, the festival blends ghost walks, fascinating talks, candlelit cemetery concerts, classic horror screenings and much more.

According to the festival website, expect a “haunting array of over 60 talks, walks, workshops, and performances, each meticulously curated to ensnare hearts and minds alike.

“Placed throughout the hidden crevices of this ancient metropolis, you will be entertained by an enigmatic cadre of writers, artists, historians, experts, academics, practitioners, and performers—bearers of secrets and whispers from the shadowy depths.”

Highlights include visits to London's most atmospheric cemeteries, from Highgate's mausoleums to the Georgian tombs of Hampstead Churchyard. There’s also a ‘boffins in coffins’ tour of famous scientists’ graves in Kensal Green cemetery.

You can make sculptures inspired by Victorian mausoleums, try butterfly taxidermy, take part in a seance in a churchyard or look inside a hospital mortuary.

There’s a talk from Cat Irving, conservator for Surgeons' Hall, on the scientific roots of the novel Frankenstein and a candlelit concert in Brompton Cemetery, courtesy of the group Gothic Opera.

You can take a guided tour of death in Westminster or watch a screening of the 1926 German silent horror film Faust - A German Folktale, with live piano accompaniment. Tour guide Pete Smith leads a walk around Smithfield darker side and Dr Sketchy's Anti-Art School combines cabaret and art in a 'Death Drawing Room' at Soho's Century Club.
